Every year, thousands of South Africans breathe a sigh of relief when they receive a SARS auto-assessment. It feels quick, convenient, and often comes with an unexpected refund. But convenience doesn’t always mean accuracy.
What Is a SARS Auto-Assessment?
A SARS auto-assessment is prepared using information received from employers, medical schemes, banks, retirement fund administrators and third-party data providers. If SARS believes it has sufficient information, it may issue an assessment automatically.
Why You Shouldn't Accept It Blindly
While many auto-assessments are correct, some may contain incomplete or inaccurate information because they rely on data submitted by third parties. Common issues include missing retirement annuity contributions, medical aid contributions, omitted deductions and the incorrect treatment of provisional taxpayers.
Common Deductions to Review
- Retirement annuity contributions
- Medical expenses and tax credits
- Approved charitable donations
- Home office expenses (where applicable)
- Business and travel expenses
- Investment-related deductions
Already Received Your Refund?
If you later discover errors, you may still submit a corrected return before the filing deadline. If additional deductions are approved, you could receive an extra refund. If you were overpaid, SARS may require repayment of the excess.
2026 Filing Deadlines
- Non-Provisional Taxpayers: 23 October 2026
- Provisional Taxpayers & Trusts: 22 January 2027
